Odelet releases genre-defying new album, with a surprise twist

Proudly defying genre, Raindance is the fourth studio album from Odelet.

By Graeme Smith

Raindance opens jazzy and soulful with soft vocalisations and meditative piano. Things become hypnotic as its melancholic groove continues. There are moments of longing like Dirge while title track Raindance and Jezebel prove particularly haunting numbers. As we near the end of the album, the soul ramps up, arriving finally at the lingering, image-rich Sands of Time.

A minimalism that runs through it all that works incredibly powerfully, letting the vocals take centre stage and stir the heart.

Not satisfied with releasing one new album, Odelet has also unveiled a dub remix version of Raindance, giving us yet another dimension to its sound.

A Detroit, USA and California-based singer, songwriter, producer and visual artist, Odelet first graced these pages in May 2024 through her album, Pisces Pie. “I’ve really not heard much like Odelet,” I said in my review, and that continues to be case. She’s an artist in the truest sense of the word.

Raindance was mixed completely analogue by Larry Crane while Odelet performs nearly every instrument on the record. Both Raindance and Raindance in Dub are out now and you can give them a listen below.
