Tommy Champion teams up with Mcclendon for subtly rousing new single

The first single from his upcoming album, Phases & Statis, Wait For Me is the lush new track from Tommy Champion.

By Graeme Smith

Wait For Me opens unexpectedly with a spoken-word sample – a voice memo from Champion’s late godfather, Norwegian sea captain Reidulf Maalen, recorded during their final visit before his passing. It’s a poignant start and from there the song settles into a melancholic, soulful arrangement. The vocals are full of passion, floating ghostly under the soft rock instrumental. As the track progresses, it builds in complexity, proving subtly rousing. A fading, percussive close will stay with you.

Champion’s upcoming album, Phases & Stasis, was three years in the making. It blurs genres as it channels the intimacy of Nick Drake, the ambition of Pink Floyd, and the DIY orchestration of early Beck and Sufjan Stevens. The album was written during a retreat to his childhood home in Connecticut, USA with long-time collaborator Mcclendon who sings lead alongside Emma Rae. If the name Mcclendon seems familiar, it’s because the artist previously featured on our pages in 2023.

Wait For Me is out now and you can give it a listen below.
