Fans of The Collection will recognise many of the tracks on this solo debut. Wimbish has reimagined many of his mainstays in his self-titled album, giving them an anthemic folk pop sound. There are two new songs too.
Across the album we get country-infused pop rock with plenty of relatability. Wimbish brings each track’s story to life through charismatic and passionate vocals that are easy on the ear while accessible and nuanced instrumentals provide the backdrop. Things start in memorable style with Won’t Stop Yet (One More Step), teeing up the rest of the record nicely.
Love Me More is as introspective as it is romantic. Its wordplay and use of imagery makes it an early highlight. Medication (I Deserve to be Well) is Wimbish at his most vulnerable, and it proves rousing as a result. Beautiful Life (Just Can’t Get Enough) is soft and reassuring.
The Weather (Too Tired To Cry) kicks off the album’s second half in bittersweetly upbeat style. It leads into the delicate Love (At The End of The World), the folksy You (Taste Like Wine), and powerful closer Take It With You.
Thematically, the album delves into the murky waters of relationships. “It’s a common experience, but you get into a relationship and this person makes his or her problems yours,” says Wimbish. “Even if it’s not explicitly your problem, the energy becomes ‘I’m suffering so we’re both going to suffer.’ I’m trying to say ‘let’s talk through it and take care of it emotionally’.
“I always just want people to feel like they’re not alone. On these songs, I’m tapping into some deeply vulnerable topics and spaces, like relationships, self-loathing, depression and fear. My hope is people will feel very seen and maybe even held.”
