A project by Lily Minke Tahar, who previously performed under the moniker Minke, Shapeshifter is the stunning debut album by YEARN.

Originally from Jakarta, Indonesia, Tahar immigrated to Pennsylvania, USA in the late ’90s due to political unrest in her country. She now resides in Seattle, Washington.
Her new album originated from vivid dreams starring an obscure figure that frequented her nightly amid waking life realities of depression and financial woes.
Marapi Lullaby opens the album with some ambiance and poetry. It transports us, taking us away from our familiar surroundings to the magical world of Shapeshifter.
The album’s title track is an early statement of intent. It’s melody is moody, groovy and catchy, providing a captivating base on which the meaningful lyrics are built. They are beautifully emoted by Lily’s vocals. Headphones recommended – I had goosebumps.
From there, things slow down for the gentle, jazzy verse of dtl before livening back up for the chorus. Even within the first few tracks, this album had me guessing what would come next.
Its eclectic mix is punctuated by lullabies, giving us quiet moments of recovery as we’re taken on its breath-taking journey that speaks of just getting by in a modern world that seeks to keep us in boxes. A theme of escape runs strongly through it, as does nature and love.
There’s so much more I could say about this album, but I’ll just leave it with this comment: this is a strong album of the year contender for me. The pathos, the originality, and poetry make it wonderfully unique.
Shapeshifter is out now on Doe Records, available to buy as a digital album or on vinyl via Bandcamp. You can give it a listen below.
