Leonard Cohen’s influence looms large in UK band’s new single

She Is The Flowers is the second release from The Jacob Ifans Band.

By Graeme Smith

The single has a touch of the throwback about it. Ifans is accompanied simply by himself on acoustic guitar, Cassius Nymh on drums, guitar, bass, and backing vocals, and Maddy Constable on vocals. The effect is mesmerising. Everything is so understated that each element feels equally important.

The track is enhanced by a straightforward yet powerful video.

The lyrics are poetic and haunting, delivered effortlessly by Ifans distinct vocals style. The harmonies make the chorus a standout moment. They speak of bittersweet nostalgia and finding beauty in painful moments.

With roots in rural Wales, Scotland and London, The Jacob Ifans Band formed in Cornwall in late 2024. Their influences include Johnny Cash, Rodriguez, John Francis Flynn and Leonard Cohen. The latter looms large in She Is The Flowers.
