2025 is the year we fell in love with Kat Kikta, and the topic of love looms heavy over her latest single.
By Graeme Smith
The whispered vocals of Was It Almost Love? hit hard emotionally as a cosmic, ambient soundscape unfolds. There’s an arresting intimacy to the composition and Kikta’s isolated vocals shine. The lyrics tell of relationship turmoil with illuminating detail.
“At the centre of the song is this moment where you realise you don’t need someone else to feel love or to define your own sense of worth” says Kikta. “It is a song for anyone who’s been broken hearted, ghosted, and left wondering if that’s all they deserve in this life?
“We’re not meant to die with an ending of a relationships but sometimes it feels that way. I wish this song brings hope, illumination and conclusion to those relationships which didn’t get a closure.”
The Avant Garde stylings of Kat Kikta have been featuring on our blog since March 2025. It’s fair to say I was instantly gripped by her music. Her ode to peace, Cherry Trees, had me so enraptured that I invited her on our Going Underground podcast to talk about it.
An unexpected cover of Fine Young Cannibals’ She Drives Me Crazy sealed the infatuation in July.
Now, Was It Almost Love? proves a fitting further chapter. It pushes Kikta’s sound into more experimental territory while showing the heart we’ve come to expect from her. Kat Kikta is an artist who is unafraid to do her own thing, and I love that about her.
Was It Almost Love? is out now, and you can listen to it below.
