Discovery: Misteriseparli brings European cool to our pages

Mondo Exotico expands the exotic world of Italy’s Misteriseparli.

By Graeme Smith

The album is the Pescara-based duo’s second, following on from their debut Speedbeforedeath, and is also our first taste of their music here at York Calling.

It doesn’t disappoint, weaving together varied yet cohesive soundscapes across six deep and complex tracks.

The calling of seagulls, chattering of dolphins, crashing of waves and clashes of thunder welcome you into atmospheric opener Big Tail. Hypnotic electronic instrumentals provide the groove, a groove carried through to the cosmic Off To Nowhere, which proves a lively highlight.

Misteriseparli blend the old school and forward-facing well. Flash Gordo leans into the former with its percussive underlayer and quirky vibe, while extended album closer Noloso provides the latter, unfolding experimentally over nearly nine minutes.

Elsewhere Kabooie is the album’s moodiest track, driving along with urgency, and Brujeria is a seductive, Daft Punk-esque moment, and another highlight.

You won’t hear much like Mondo Exotico. Andrew and Pepi have created a sound that’s very much their own, combining European cool with fun electronica that lets it all hang out. If you’re looking for a record to get lost in today, then look no further.

Mondo Exotico is out now via Vina Records. You can give it a listen below.
