Discovery: Greece’s Hollow Shift’s dark sound feels distinctly Northern

Exploring themes of identity, isolation, and psychology, Hollow Shift’s new EP, RELOAD, has got them on my radar.

By Graeme Smith

The electronic duo consisting of former members of Keep Shelly is based in Athens, Greece, but draw on the sound of the Goth and post-punk movements that originated a little closer to our Northern England home. In RELOAD they channel the pulsating beats of New Order, layering on dark, introspective lyrics and plenty of defiance.

“On this new EP, we pulled toward rhythms and textures that are more kinetic and immersive,” the band says, “but we never wanted to lose that sense of emotional shadow—that tension between movement and introspection that makes Hollow Shift feel like a room you can’t escape from.”

Lady Gaga-esque vocals purr over the dark, alternative arrangements that give us five flavours of Hollow Shift. Compositionally, they range from the dance-inducing to the industrial without ever losing congruence or feeling stale.

The EP is an exciting introduction to a band I’m looking forward to hearing more from. You can keep up to date with Hollow Shift via their website, and by following them on X, Spotify, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok.

RELOAD is out now, and you can listen to it below.
