His tracks range from the personal to the political, sometimes mixing the two. His latest, Only Love, sits at the personal end of the spectrum, exploring the long-distance relationship he has with his young son.

While Whitehouse is based here in the UK, his child is in Japan meaning their relationship must endure long absences. He captures the longing associated with this in a heartbreaking piano ballad. A stripped-back production gives plenty of space to the expression of his vocals and the poignancy of his lyrics.

The story is personal to Whitehouse, but it could apply more broadly as a love song, inviting listeners to apply their own emotion to the piece. In that sense, it’s cleverly done, and shows why he’s an artist to which we keep returning.
