We’ve had a fair few comeback stories pass through these pages. Sometimes artists must take some time away and often, when they do finally drop that new release, it’s all the better for it.

By Million Wires’ latest EP, Not Over, comes after a fourteen-year break, and the Poland-based alternative rock act have spent that time finessing their sound. They describe it as “a story of unfinished harmonies, finally finding their voice.” What we get as listeners are lingering, ponderous guitar-led instrumentals paired with soul searching vocals and lyrics.
The band liken their sound to Riverside, Death Cab for Cutie, and early Coldplay and I can certainly detect hints there, but By Million Wires have really crafted a sound of their own. They push the envelope while not being so experimental so that they’d be unapproachable. There are only five tracks on Not Over, but its expansiveness makes it feel bigger.
An emotional core gives plenty of room for expression, keeping the listener engaged even as the music smoulders and meanders. Each track builds in movements to satisfying climaxes. The EP opens with Over which welcomes us into its world, setting an intriguing and inviting foundation.
Glass Houses ups the tempo for a fiery rock moment before I Know Better rests at the heart of the record, proving a highlight. A guitar hook instantly grabs you while a rumbling rhythm section envelops. The vocals are the true engine of the track, rich with emotion while they sing lyrics of finding one’s own path. “Help me recognise victory when it comes,” the chorus pleads, setting up a triumphant finish.
Lost or Won brings with it an air of mystery and satisfying licks of bass. Runaway completes the record with a funky brightness. It develops nicely from verse to powerful chorus; a transition that’s another highlight.
There’s a true spirit of early ‘00s soft rock in Not Over. With it, By Million Wires are reviving a sound that’s overdue a revival and reannouncing themselves to the world. I found it to be a wonderful introduction to their sound.
Here’s hoping we don’t have to wait another fourteen years for By Million Wires’ next release. Even if we do, it’ll be worth it. You can keep up to date with the band by heading to their website, and by following them on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram.
