The Cornered Knees is a new act to us, and presents as something of an enigma, but their new album Like A Neutered Dog proves that they are a thoughtful one.

Their unassuming bio on Bandcamp places them in New York City, USA and their Spotify profile self-describes as “a mostly uninteresting person who makes somewhat interesting music.” While the modesty sets a low expectation, their new album does quite the opposite.
Right from reading its provocative title, I was intrigued. The slow build intro of opening track Nagata Kabi/Two Drunkards was enough to fully absorb me. Its gentleness lulled me into a false sense of security before sucker punching me with a sudden clash of post-rock disorder.
Soulful, passionate vocals provide the beating heart of the piece while distorted instrumentals provide the ragged, determined edge. It’s a spirited start and an encouraging sign of things to come. For the track’s second half (it’s nine minutes long) things settle into a softer, more ambient space with flashes of experimental lustre.
I Walk Alone Again takes things in a different direction, giving us a driving number that combines rock with elements of traditional blues and soul. It’s an early indication that this album will be one of surprises.
Nudes is an Editors-esque indie dirge. To Be Pathetic continues in a similar vein, introducing a little acoustic brightness that offsets its melancholic lyrics. It’s a contrast in an album that’s full of them. The mid part cruises through deviations of acoustic folk and post-rock noise. Sing About Nothing is one of the most stripped back and vulnerable moments. It’s captivating in its minimalism.
The History of Asian Mutilation takes the experimentation to a peak with overlapping layers of ambience, percussion, synths, and longing vocals. It’s a curious highlight and sets up closer Salad Day Aviators nicely. The lingering final chapter channels gospel and country energy though its use of organ while building slowly towards its inevitable climax. The album’s finale doesn’t disappoint.
Perhaps The Cornered Knees is correct to foreground music over personality. Like A Neutered Dog is a well-crafted wonder and should be in the rotation for anyone who loves dream pop, indie rock, indie pop, chamber pop, or shoegaze.
