Discovery: Maddie Ashman

Maddie Ashman is a British singer songwriter whose sound has been compared to Orla Gartland and Dodie. She’s also been picked up by BBC 6 Music, who described her as music as “poised, transparent and very lovely.” I was keen to check her out for myself. Her latest is called 6AM.

By Graeme Smith

6AM feels like a confession, a chronicle of the thoughts that go through Maddie’s head in the early hours of the day. The autobiographical detail make it all very compelling, as does Maddie’s charming vocals. They’re set to a modern-classical arrangement, featuring sampled percussion and Maddie’s own cello – the latter is an instrument that she is championing for its use in pop.

Maddie grew up in Hampshire and has always loved music and learning to play instruments, including jazz piano, electric guitar and, of course, cello. She’s certainly one to keep an eye on. You can take a listen to 6AM below.
