Genra, real name John Gilchrist, is an Oakland, California-based hip hop artist who I’ve featured a couple of times before on the blog. His latest single, a bold, bright treatise on modern life is taken from his new album Overcomer. It’s called Leaving.
By Graeme Smith
John has a way with words that he brings to all of his tracks. Leaving is no exception and he knocks off unexpected references at a rate of knots during a smooth, free-flowing verse. There’s a brassy, jazzy style to the backing track that gives it an uplifting feel. At less than two minutes long, the music is quickly over, but its sound will stay with you long after.
The album title Overcomer refers to John’s battles with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and Leaving is the final triumphant note of the story. You can check it out below and find the album in all the usual places.
