Discovery: The Hydrogen Trees

The Hydrogen Trees are a Scarborough-based analogue, audio-visual project who have just hit my radar thanks to their new single For Coal Beach.

By Graeme Smith

For Coal Beach is a track that paints a picture that is slowly built up layer by layer. From its static-y drums and looping keys to its pleading vocals, it’s beautifully atmospheric. The picture is melancholic yet vibrant, bringing to mind the soundscapes of Radiohead while still feeling utterly unique.

The track is taken from The Hydrogen Trees EP Back Down Woe Betide Ravine, which is also out today via Irregular Patterns. I always love it when such a unique project comes my way, and it’s a bonus that it’s been created locally. You can give For Coal Beach a listen below.
