And it was with that release that I first became a fan of Lissie too. Her powerhouse track When I’m Alone played on repeat on NME TV at the time, as it did on my iTunes and in my head. Three more studio albums, a couple of live albums and some retrospectives later, she’s still very much in my heart.
Last year saw the release of the anniversary edition of Catching A Tiger and a collection of early works entitled Watch Over Me, both of which were reviewed on this blog. Never one to rest on her laurels, Lissie has now released her latest album, Carving Canyons.
Carving Canyons is an album that manages to be boundary-pushing for Lissie while remaining undeniably her. Its central theme is heartbreak, and features twelves tracks that chronicles the ups and down of a breakup. It’s deeply personal and there’s power in its vulnerability. You can check out my full album review here.
When I asked Lissie about the album she said:
I started working on Carving Canyons in November of 2020. I tend to only write songs when I feel like I have something to share and say. It took me about six months into the pandemic to start processing all of the collective & personal grief. So it’s an album that started out being about a breakup but then followed that arc of grief from anger to sadness, acceptance to hope.
