London-based, Finnish alternative pop artist Emmi Maaria has been all over these pages since she first came to our attention in May last year. I’ve shared a number of her tracks, while Jane has included her music in her Underground Folk round up, and interviewed her. Her latest transports us to her native land. It’s called Midsummer Silence.
By Graeme Smith
Midsummer Silence was inspired by a distant relative of Emmi’s, Aino Engström and paints a picture of a dreamy Finnish midsummer. Strings create the early atmosphere, bowed and plucked, before Emmi’s characterful vocals come in. Her lyrics are as poetic as always, rich with storytelling and female empowerment. A climactic finish combines the classical and electronic sublimely. It could be her best yet.
The track was produced, recorded and mixed by Emmi, with mastering coming from Tony Cousins of Metropolis Studios. You can give Midsummer Silence a listen below.
