UK-based alternative rock outfit Trummerkind first came to my attention in March this year thanks to their edgy and irreverent track Superstar. At the time I called it “rock but not as you know it” and the same could be said of their latest, a reflection on the darkness that comes with relentlessly pursuing success. It’s called Beauty Queen.

Opening with the sound of clicking cameras and echoing, ghostly laughter, you instantly get the story of Beauty Queen, even before the cutting lyrics come in. There’s a touchy of folksy cautionary tale about the track which is elevated by Trummerkind’s own brand of Gothic rock. It powers on urgently before hitting a pleading chorus.
Trummerkind are singer songwriter Rowen Silverster on vocals and bass, Robert Silverster on drums and Oli Sturdy on guitar. Beauty Queen was recorded in Exeter and Brighton by the band and mixed and mastered by Duncan Chave. You can give it a listen below.
