EP Review: Goldschatz – Twin Flame

Goldschatz are a Swiss-Canadian folk duo who have just come to my attention thanks to their second EP release. Written on rainy days on Vancouver Island, it’s called Twin Flame.

By Graeme Smith

The term Twin Flame is used to describe the connection between two people with the same soul, and there is certainly a lot of love and romance to be had in Goldschatz’s new EP. The record was written on a road trip full of van life, rest stops and campfires and some of that atmosphere creeps into its compositions too.

The EP opens with Keep the Fire Burning. A steady rhythm gives a lovely sense of movement before dual vocals come in, delivering some delicious harmonies. Its chorus is singalong and anthemic. It’s a rousing start that sets the scene and has you wanting to hear more.

Gemini takes things in a moodier direction, with rambling bass and a sultry chorus. The lyrics paint a beautifully emotional picture. Free Rolling speaks of adventure, delivered against a stripped-back backdrop that gives plenty of room for you to visualise its lyrics. It’s a classic Americana highlight.

Kindness of Strangers is a cover of another York Calling favourite, Courtney Marie Andrew. Goldschatz’s version is raw and intimate, and its twin vocals give the track a greater emotional depth. I’ll Be Here in the Morning is another cover, this time of Don Williams’s atmospheric country folk love ballad.

Twin Flame is the perfect collection for anyone looking for a bit of escapism in their life. It’s folk music with soul and its theme of love and adventure give it a wonderful sense of warmth. It’s difficult to find your soulmate in this life, but it’s clear that Goldschatz have managed just that, and they’re making some beautiful music together.

Goldschatz are Rykka and Timothy Jaromir. Rykka is from Canada while Timothy is a Swiss guitarist and singer. Twin Flame was recorded in Winterthur, Switzerland and produced by Giuliano Sulzberger. You can give it a listen below.
