Quincey May Brown is a Manchester-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has just come to my attention thanks to the lead single from her upcoming debut album Basic Surgeon. Part of an autobiographical coming of age journey it’s called Heart, I Hope This Email Finds You Well.
By Graeme Smith
Opening slow and eerie, there is an instant sense of wonder created by the track’s harp arrangement. The lyrics are visceral and intimate, delivered with character by Quincey’s vocals. Her music truly is a unique offering, and this kind of vulnerable honesty is hard to come by and much treasured. I’m very excited by her sound and writing.
Basic Surgeon was produced by Joel Harries and features woodwind by Ben Castle. It’s set for release on 15 November by Squirrelled Away Records. The album is available to pre-order via Bandcamp now on limited edition translucent green 180g vinyl. Quincey will be playing two shows to celebrate the launch of the album at the end of November in Manchester and Northampton.
