Abby Asabea is a London-based soul artist who has just hit my radar thanks to the recent release of her nostalgic track that’s an ode to funk. It’s called The Way it Was.
By Graeme Smith
Abby has been mostly developing her art in isolation but thanks to support from Youth Music, funded by Tik Tok and the People’s Postcode Lottery, she’s stepping out onto the London scene, and picking up where Amy Winehouse left off.
The Way It Was is her ode to funk and ’70s cinema, giving us a wonderfully old school sound that’s been reinvented for the modern age. What stands out most is Abby’s voice. It’s instantly captivating, floating over plucked strings, simmering percussion and funky bass. Though the cues are all there, it’s a track that really marks itself out as unique.
The track was mixed by Grace Banks and you can give it a listen below.
