New Music: Emmi Maaria – Bride’s Farewell

London-based, Finnish singer, violist and composer Emmi Maaria has become a regular feature on this blog. We’ve been sharing her music since 2022, always struck by her inventiveness and unique perspective as she dives into literature, folk song and the female experience in her craft.

By Graeme Smith

Her latest track, Bride’s Farewell, combines a bright and airy arrangement with a dark and disturbing lyrical message. Borrowing from a Finnish national epic Kalevala, it highlights and undermines its guidance on how a groom should discipline his bride-to-be.

Musically, we are given terse, looping strings, textured electronica and Emmi’s always characterful vocals. It shows another side of her sound and resemble very little else out there.

Bride’s Farewell was produced, recorded and mixed by Emmi, and mastered by Felix Davis at Metropolis Studios. You can give it a listen below.
