EP Review: ETAN – Growing Pains (Anthems for Late Bloomers)

London-bases singer, songwriter and producer ETAN has just come to my attention through the recent release of her debut EP.

ETAN started to record and produce Growing Pains (Anthems for Late Bloomers) completely independently in 2020. Not even the pandemic could slow her down, and in that time she also created videos for the EP’s tracks. I’m certainly glad that she didn’t let the world grinding to a halt stop her. This debut is a triumph, and the shot in the arm for which the pop world is crying out.

The five tracks that make up the EP have been slowly released over the past few years, and all but the title track (so far) have an accompanying video. It means that each stands alone as a complete product while they also work together as a cohesive whole, giving us a vibrant set of emotional songs infused with a mix of modern electronica and classical undertones.

Feels Like Running sets the early pace with its driving rhythm and characterful vocals before I’m Back brings a bright and optimistic energy to proceedings. It has a beautiful balance of throwback and cutting edge elements that makes it feel timeless, while its hooky melody will stick with you.

Duck Down gives the EP a severe and edgy centrepiece with a punchy chorus that’s full of self-confidence. It brings to mind the unapologetic pop of Lady Gaga or latter day Goldfrapp.

Hang On To Me slows things down with a soft, soul-stirring and experimental moment. Growing Pains then pushes the envelope further with a quirky, textured composition that gradually builds to a powerful, anthemic finish.

ETAN is just starting out on her career but I can tell she’s something special. I’m not the only one who thinks so. She’s been picked up by Rolling Stone and Wonderland, and her EP is already getting some impressive listening numbers. Keep an eye on her; she could be the next big thing on the UK alternative pop scene.
