Discovery: Gunslingers

Gunslingers are a folk and country act based in Midwestern USA who have just come to my attention through their outsider anthem, Teeth.

By Graeme Smith

Teeth is a track that opens raw and stripped-back before layers of strings build a rich, life-affirming picture. What stands out most is the vocals, which revel in their uniqueness, much as the message of the lyrics encourage us to do. There’s a beautiful poetry to the lyrics, especially during an understatedly fiery, singalong chorus. I’ve heard few tracks that are more eloquent.

Gunslingers are Lou Heneise on vocals, song writing and acoustic guitar, Derek Long on banjo, Monzie Leo McNevin on mandolin and Zab Watson on bass. Teeth was recorded in a public library in Lawrence, Kansas, with the bass being tracked from Melbourne, Australia. You can give the track a listen below.
