Mascara Wizard are a Montreal, Canada-based folk pop trio who have just grabbed my attention through the release of their debut single, Elderberry.
By Graeme Smith
Forming during the COVID pandemic, Mascara Wizard is made up of poet and musician Simina Banu, and the duo of musicians otherwise known as The Oops Kitchen, Iola Patalas and Michael Johancsik.
Elderberry is a track that brings together the disparate genres of folk and electronica to tell a romantic tale. Simina explains that the lyrics are deliberately enigmatic, meaning it’s really up to the listener to decide what the track’s about. Whatever it is, it’s articulated beautifully through an experimental composition that supports characterful and charismatic vocals.
The single is the lead track from the band’s upcoming debut EP Sunbathing In The Valley Of Death which is set for release 21 April. You can check out its lyric video below.
