Join Glitter Etiquette on a cosmic trip as they plunge into metaphor for their new EP, Cerulean.
By Graeme Smith
Cerulean is set in a universe in which the titular colour has been eradicated and a journey is underway to rediscover its essence, all while fighting the reality distorting Red Army. Why cerulean? According to Glitter Etiquette, it’s a metaphor of truth, hope, and artistic purity.
That may all sound a little heavy, but sonically the EP is anything but. Opening with a lively, disco-infused Cows, we get an instant sense that Glitter Etiquette want to make a sound that’s as approachable as it is meaningful. Sorrowful vocals float over its relentless rhythms, creating a unique soundscape.
A PLACE… takes things in a rock direction, giving us elements of grunge and shoegaze alongside some subtle electronica. Possession bristles with a moody undercurrent and a sense of foreboding; it’s a powerful mid-EP highlight. Be Fine injects some bright, The Jesus and Mary Chain-esque psychedelia into proceedings. BLUE PLASTIC closes the album’s story in lingering fashion with a sound that sits somewhere between indie rock, prog, and country.
If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you’ll know that I love bands who have something to say and aren’t afraid to do things a little differently. Glitter Etiquette certainly fit this description, and their new EP is one that’s easy to love.
Cerulean is out now and you can give it a listen below.
