Skewering a certain demographic’s fetish for industry and manual labour as well as the hellscape that is the service industry, People Pleaser is the new single from York Calling favourites, 9 o’clock Nasty.
By Graeme Smith
Opening with a steady groove, People Pleaser quickly finds its stride with call and response vocals in the verse. As ever, 9 o’clock Nasty have plenty to say with their poetic lyrics, cutting right to the heart of the matter and giving us nothing behind which its target can hide.
Its video sees the trio operating the call centre from hell, suited, booted and ready to take your call. It’s a not-so-subtle sign of solidarity for those stuck in boorish service and retail jobs.
We’ve been covering the music of Pete Brock, Ted Pepper and Sydd Spudd, aka Leicester-based rockers 9 o’clock Nasty, for some time now, but they never fail to surprise and delight with their new stuff. People Pleaser marks a refined sound for the band, a sound they say they’ve been aiming for all along.
If you haven’t already checked out their recent album, This Is Crowland, I highly recommend that you do. People Pleaser is out now and you give it a listen below.
