Discovery: Fold

Fold are a nu jazz collective based just down the road in Leeds who feature among their members friend of York Calling, saxophonist Emma Johnson. Their new number is called How Precious They Are.

By Graeme Smith

The track combines funky jazz instrumentals with the spoken word poetry of Lorraine Hansberry. A largely overlooked writer, Lorraine was the first African-American female author to have a play performed on Broadway.

Fold were so taken to pay tribute to Lorraine, that they have also released a whole album dedicated to her. Called Aphelion: a tribute to Lorraine Hansberry, it’s out today to coincide with the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Fold is taken from it and you can hear it below.
