Album Review: Ask Carol – AC 1: Control You

Ask Carol are a Norwegian alterative rock duo who we’ve been following on this blog since 2020. With a number of single releases under their belt, they’ve just dropped their debut album, AC 1: Control You. An intriguing prospect, I couldn’t wait to check it out. Here’s my track by track review.

The album opens with its title track, a haunting song that combines electric overtones with Gothic undertones. It’s delightfully atmospheric, with frontwoman Carol’s vocals beautifully expressive. It bounces along nicely, building to a dramatic, cinematic climax.

Tonight has a brighter feel, with an upbeat, distorted electric guitar melody setting the early tone. It has a classic rock vibe that comes to life in a soaring, passionate chorus. A short intro track then leads into Quiet One. A track we’ve shared before on this blog, it sits nicely as an early focal point, going deep with its lyrics and bringing a touch of melancholy to proceedings.

An instrumental interlude provides a breather before Pressure’s On, another previously shared single. It works well following Quiet One, with both tracks introspective with their lyrics. Pressure’s On brings a bit more vibrancy, however, with a cantering tempo and vocals that leave it all out there. Mountains of Cash is another previous share, and turns things more outward-looking, with a punk arrangement and a lyrical attack on those who hoard wealth.

There are three versions of Darkest Hour on this album, and the first one comes next. The Alt Mix brings a psychedelic swagger with it, and a bluesy rhythm. It quickly becomes clear why Ask Carol devoted so much attention to this track. It’s definitely a highlight.

The second half of the album starts with Shining Bright, the album’s emotional high point. The darkness is put aside for a moment in favour of transcendent pop rock. Come Closer returns to the blues with a stomping percussive rhythm and vocals that swerve between mellow and passionate with ease.

Run With You has a driving, urgent feel about it. Echoing guitar plays over heavy bass. It’s followed by a live rendition of Darkest Hour. Then it’s Do It In LA, the track that put Ask Carol on my radar in the first place. Its upbeat rock energy works perfectly in the context of the album, and it’s a timely reminder of just how great a track it is.

Ask Carol are, in a word, awesome. Their sound feels fresh and original and they put so much of themselves and their story in their music. Rock fans need to check out this album, and you can do so below.
