Discovery: Mortal Prophets

Mortal Prophets is the post-punk project of John Beckmann who has just come to my attention through his recreation of the Albert King blues hit Born Under A Bad Sign.

By Graeme Smith

Though technically a cover, there’s very little common ground between Albert King’s original and John’s version. He has truly reconstructed it, with experimental folktronica and a wonderful use of minimalism. It seethes with melancholia, feeling like an understated cry for help. It’s powerful stuff.

Mortal Prophets are on the verge of releasing their second album Dealey Plaza Blues which promises to bring something exciting and new to the world of music. Alongside Born Under A Bad Sign, the album will feature reimaginations of Hey Joe, Baby Please Don’t Go, among others.
