Interview: Jeremy Parsons

Texas-based musician Jeremy Parsons has produced a gorgeous piece of work in his new track, Life Worth Dyin’ For. It’s full of soul, seeing the artist sing over an impressive array of synths, leading into an anthemic chorus. It’s a great track – find a stream at the bottom of this interview if you haven’t checked it out yet.

It’s been a while since we last caught up with you. How have things been?

It has been a minute, and I’m glad to chat again! Things have been going great. I’m staying busy and fully booked with shows; I now have twenty-plus a month. I recently released my newest single, Life Worth Dyin’ For, it’s doing well on the radio and being well received. I’m very grateful for that.

We recently reviewed your track Life Worth Dyin’ For. What can you tell us about the song?

Yes, and thanks so much for that! It means a lot when you can tell the reviewer sat down and truly heard your song. I love this song very much. It meant a lot to me from the moment I wrote it back in 2018 when I was living in Nashville, right before considering moving back to Texas. I originally wanted it on the Things To Come project, but we couldn’t find a place. You only know why that happens later. It’s meant to be a part of this project I’m working on with my good friend Dustin Martin. I’ve been playing it live ever since I wrote it, and when this project started, I pitched it to Dustin as an option, and much to my joy, he loved it. It’s one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written, and I love to play it because it’s consistent with how I feel. I live a life worth dyin’ for. I’m lucky to do what I do, and that’s a place in life I would love to see everybody get to be. It shows me that people are doing the work, growing and nurturing themselves, making us all better conduits to spread love and positivity.

How has the reception to the track been so far, and where can the song be purchased?

The reception has been fantastic. I haven’t heard anything negative from anyone, not that I want to. My friends dig it, my family enjoys it, and all the reviewers have been kind and flattering. Dustin and I have loved it from the start, but you only know how it’s received once it’s out there. I am delighted and can’t wait to see what it does next and what the future songs will accomplish. You can purchase this song on my website at jeremyparsonsmusic.com, Apple Music, Amazon, and all other digital outlets.

Do you plan to release any more singles in the near future?

I do! I plan to get the songs out more consistently. We have many more to come and want to give y’all almost too much to listen to.

Are there any plans to release a full length album or EP anytime soon?

Tickin’, Humanity, and Life Worth Dyin’ For are the first three singles off of what will be an EP. We’re only on the first EP at this point, and there are still 2 or 3 songs left to go on this one with the next EP on deck. This one is called Life, and Death follows.

What do you think is the hardest part of working within the music industry at the moment?

It’s only ever as complicated as you make it for yourself, and the expectations you set. I want to play more shows, so I go out and try and book more shows. I want to make more music, so I go and make more music. Being an independent artist is a blessing in the right mentality. Yes, you’re doing more work because you don’t have a whole team jumping through all the hoops for you. But you grow from those hoops, and when one is on fire and gets you burned, you’ve learned something. And that’s important. Now, if you step into this industry and have this unrealistic notion that it can be how it used to be, you might have a problem unless you have loads of money. You can make a lot of things happen for the right price. That’s consistent. I have nothing against that if it’s what you want, but I’ve never had loads of money, and I never really desired to be the biggest name in anything and all over the place. Would I deny the success if it found me? Absolutely not! But it’s not something I’ve ever needed. I’m grateful to get to do this and wake up every day feeling content with this decision I made so long ago.

What is the writing and recording process like at the moment? Has it changed much over the years?

The writing process is essentially the same. It’s been consistently all over the place regarding how the ideas find you and how they come out. Do I start with a melody or lyrics? You take those as they come. The recording process has changed. We were always at a rented-out or owned studio location when I started. Now, it’s wherever you want to be if you have the right gear and space to record. And you get the same sound quality back then, if not better. It’s fantastic if you have someone who knows what they’re doing. Dustin is a master of his craft, and we’ve recorded in some very outside of the box type of ways. A mattress fort surrounded me like the last couple of vocal booth sessions, leaned up against the wall with a lamp, the mic, and mic stand inside with a slew of heavy comforters thrown over to make a door I could get in and out through.

Do you have anything else exciting coming up this year?

I plan to get more music out sometime this year, if not early next. I am always booking more shows and trying to get out to more places, but I don’t see myself venturing outside Texas again until next year.

Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?

I really wish I could say yes to this! I want to come back very badly. It’s been too long, and I must do something about it. I thought I would have an opportunity open up this past summer, but there was no follow-through from someone I sought help from to make it happen. I’ll try and figure something out and keep y’all updated.
