Album Review: Nate Logston – Marriages & Divorces

Nate Logston is from a small town in Indiana, USA and is an architect by day. He’s written and recorded four albums previously, and it’s his fifth, set for release in the new year, that’s got him on my radar. It’s called Marriages & Divorces.

By Graeme Smith

Marriages & Divorces is an eleven-track journey through Nate’s unique brand of folk-infused alternative rock. It opens with the steady groove of Water High. There’s a touch of melancholia about it, delivered through soulful and expressive vocals, and supported by looping country rock instrumentals. Its sense of intimacy is instantly inviting, and I was keen to delve deeper.

No Takers takes things in a funky direction with some vibrant nods to ’70s soul. Ringside rumbles along with some bluesy folk and soul-searching lyrics. You Don’t Seem To Mind is a soft, acoustic moment, with Nate’s vocals simply accompanied by plucked guitar. It’s a beautifully vulnerable highlight.

Exit Plan livens things back up again without losing any of the hard-hitting lyrics. Figure This Out is a moody number with lingering notes and a rich sense of atmosphere. Leaving Lies is a wistful and storytelling number that invites us along on an emotional and healing journey. It’s another highlight.

Closed canters along and brims with a fiery undercurrent. My Brother marries folksy strings with electrifying guitar. Into Afterward is an airy acoustic track infused with a sense of despairing longing before Gradually closes the album with a gentle reflection that finds some reluctant hope. The pair of tracks prove a final, relatable highlight.

Nate Logston is a musician who sings and writes from the heart. His music is rich with authentic emotion and clever storytelling. I’m glad to have discovered it.

Marriages & Divorces is mixed by Rob Shelton at Altamira Studios and mastered by Dave McNair. It will be out 5 January 2024 and you can follow Nate on Spotify so that you don’t miss it on release.
